While the Patriots re-signed Cam Newton a few weeks ago, it still feels like the team is looking to add at the position.
Based on how last week transpired, it wouldn’t be a surprise if that came via the draft and potentially even looking into trading up to do so.
If they do, keep an eye on Justin Fields and Trey Lance, particularly Fields from Ohio State.
“I’d keep an eye on somebody like Trey Lance or Justin Fields,” NFL Media’s Daniel Jeremiah said on the “Move the Sticks” podcast, via NESN.com. “Those are the two that would make sense for them to target. Hear a lot of rumors out there that they are really high on Justin Fields out of Ohio State. So, they’d have to (trade up) quite a ways to get Justin Fields.”
Selecting at No. 15 overall, it feels like there’s very little chance either player would fall that far, but with 10 picks in the draft the Patriots do have the ability to move up into the top 10 if they wanted.
Bucky Brooks, who was on the podcast with Jeremiah, expects the Patriots to make a big move.
“I think the New England Patriots could be real aggressive,” Brooks said. “We’ve seen the New England Patriots step outside their comfort zone as it relates to free agency. We saw them completely rebuild the roster with the number of signings and free agency. … I believe they’re about to go all in on an offensive makeover. The young quarterback is the final piece to the puzzle. And I think that quarterback will be an athletic quarterback.”
The NFL Draft begins April 29.
