Prior to this week, the assumption with Stephon Gilmore was he probably wouldn't be with the team in 2021 considering he will be seeking a new contract and won't play on his current deal.
But, after all the Patriots' moves this week, doesn't it make sense for the team to try and work something out with him?
According to The Athletic's Jeff Howe, the Patriots are not actively shopping the star cornerback.
“His name has come up in trade conversations over the past year, but nothing has ever come close to materializing," he wrote. "That’s remained the case of late. If Gilmore’s name has come up in any discussions, it hasn’t been a result of the Patriots trying to unload him.”
Gilmore is scheduled to make $7 million this season, which seems extremely unlikely to happen. But, instead of trading him, it seems like it could make more sense for the Patriots to try and sign him to a two or three-year extension given they all of a sudden have turned into a playoff contender.
