After not attending mandatory minicamp because he's not happy with his current contract, training camp is now just a few weeks away and nothing has changed with Stephon Gilmore and the Patriots.
The cornerback is due to make $7.5 million in 2021, which is not something he's thrilled with.
Appearing on ESPN's Sports Center Thursday, Jeremy Fowler gave an update on where things stand between Gilmore and the team.
“Sources I have talked to around the league suspect Gilmore and the Patriots will get together, have discussions closer to training camp and potentially hammer out a deal," he said. "See where things go because Gilmore is not thrilled to be playing on $7 million this year. He needs a new deal in the worse way.”
Fowler mentions there haven't been many trade discussions around the league involving Gilmore because New England hasn't made any other moves at the position and need him on its roster.
As for what a new deal might look like, Fowler mentioned Darius Slay's deal from last year with the Eagles, which was three years and up to $50 million with $30 guaranteed.
New England may not want to go the straight extension route and instead could just add money to Gilmore's deal for this year and then see how things play out next offseason.
