EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The Patriots obviously have had some great kickers under Bill Belichick — Adam Vinatieri, Stephen Gostkowski and on Sunday Nick Folk added his name to the list.
Folk made four field goals in the 25-6 win over the Jets, which now has him at 33 straight field goals made dating back to last year. That is a new franchise record.
Stephen Gostkowski previously held the record with 31 and then Vinatieri had streaks of 25 and 23.
“It doesn’t matter to me, really,” Folk said. “I have never been one for records, so all that credit goes to really Jake [Bailey] and Joe [Cardona] and the line the last two years, [as well as] Cam [Achord] and Joe [Houston] for believing in me. So, all the credit goes to them.”
Folk added: “Two great kickers. Legendary kickers. I am just lucky enough to get to follow them. As far as being in the same conversation, like I said, it doesn’t matter to me. I am just happy we got the win today.”
It’s been a unique start to the year for Folk as he’s been on the practice squad the first two weeks and been elevated for game-day. Undrafted rookie Quinn Nordin has been on the active roster, but he was placed on injured reserve this week, so it’s very likely he gets added to the 53-man roster this week. Folk cannot be a game-day elevation again this season, as he's reached the maximum of two.
Folk discussed what it’s been like with all the moving parts.
“I tried to just control what I can control,” he said. “Whatever the team was going to do, they were going to do. If I was kicking well I felt like I had a good chance of being here. I felt like I was kicking pretty well. One of those things where when I walk into the building and it’s out of my control. I don’t even worry about it.”
Based on how things have gone, Folk doesn’t have much to worry about.
