Not all heroes wear capes. Some wear teal socks and heavily-taped Nikes. Dolphins offensive lineman Robert Hunt took matters into his own hands Thursday night, making his mark against the Ravens with one triumphant play that, amazingly, didn’t even count. And Twitter loved every last second of it, basking in the glory of Hunt’s goliath 6’6,” 327-pound frame soaring through the air with the grace and beauty of a dove.

But alas, Hunt’s valiant effort (an impressive homage to John Elway’s famous “helicopter” run in Super Bowl XXXII) was thwarted, mostly because what he did was completely illegal. The second-year tackle was not reported as an eligible receiver on the play, negating his five-yard gain while resulting in a five-yard penalty that would bring up third-and-goal from the 11-yard line. When asked of his decision to go maverick, abandoning his duties at the line of scrimmage in pursuit of pay-dirt, the nimble O lineman admitted to briefly “blacking out” on the play, letting his fight or flight instincts get the better of him.

The lasting image of Hunt pirouetting like an Olympic figure skater immediately resonated with the social media masses, emerging as the signature moment from an otherwise unremarkable game while catapulting the 25-year-old Louisiana-Lafayette alum to cult status.

Miami’s upset of the visiting Ravens Thursday night was not the most aesthetically-pleasing affair, featuring just three touchdowns (and none until the fourth quarter) and 32 total points. But there will always be something oddly poetic about an impossibly large human running with the football, challenging the laws of nature with each thunderous step. And in case Hunt’s memory of the event is still foggy, he’ll now have the pleasure of reliving it every time he rides the elevator at Hard Rock Stadium.
