6 rings & football things: Who will be the Patriots captains in 2024?
Eugene. Los Angeles. Ann Arbor. Baton Rouge.
Those are the cities the Patriots' scouting brass has been to over the last several weeks taking in intel on the NFL Draft's top quarterbacks.
After a New England contingent of nine staffers attended quarterback Jayden Daniels' Pro Day in LSU on Wednesday, they'll be in Chapel Hill, North Carolina on Thursday taking a look at former Tarheels gunslinger Drake Maye. According to SI's Albert Breer, the Patriots will meet with Maye ahead of his workout.
Maye (6-foot-4, 223 pounds) threw 62 touchdowns to just 16 interceptions over the last two seasons at North Carolina, while also adding 1,147 yards and 16 rushing touchdowns on the ground. Though he has a bit of rookie year Josh Allen in him as far as trying to do too much and not just taking a profit, his build mixed with a ‘pass-first, but can extend with his legs’ style of play makes him a near perfect fit for the New England and OC Alex Van Pelt’s offense.
"Drake Maye had a fantastic interview at the combine," Jerod Mayo told reporters on Monday of their meeting with the signal caller last month.
"He brings a lot of energy," he continued. "You can tell he has that leadership ability... the exciting part about a guy like Drake Maye: There is really no ceiling with a guy like that... He has a lot of room to grow. He’s a young guy. Honestly, he hasn’t played football nearly as much as these other guys. So that’s definitely something we’ve looked at, but he’s definitely going to develop."
The Patriots hold the No. 3 overall pick in April's draft.
