The Patriots, who were already without veteran cornerback Malcolm Butler at practice Monday and Tuesday, might be about to lose one of their other depth options at corner for the rest of the year.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport tweeted Tuesday that Williams suffered a shoulder injury that will end his season, according to a source.

Williams, a second-round pick out of Vanderbilt in 2019, was going to be a longshot to make a roster that is deep, if not necessarily elite, at cornerback. He also had a poor game against the New York Giants last Thursday, getting beat for a touchdown and dropping an interception.

Ironically, this injury setback might keep the fourth-year pro from getting cut at the end of the month as he can now land on injured reserve and won't take up a roster spot.

Beyond that, Williams feels unlikely to return to the team next season after failing to make much of an impact during his four seasons.
