6 rings: Breaking down the Patriots’ initial 53-man roster
The Patriots have a new quarterback.
The club claimed quarterback Matt Corral on Thursday. Corral was waived by the Panthers on Wednesday.
Carolina selected Corral with the 94th pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, a third-round selection. The Patriots selected Bailey Zappe one round later.
Corral played for Lane Kiffin and the Ole Miss Rebels, throwing for 57 touchdowns and 23 interceptions over four seasons. The 6-foot-4 gunslinger will now be placed on New England’s 53-man active roster.
The Patriots have done quite a bit of quarterback backflips over the last several days, waiving both Bailey Zappe and Mailk Cunningham on Tuesday before signing both back to their practice squad on Wednesday. They now add Corral to the room.
He’lll back up starter Mac Jones, whom he went toe-to-toe with in a shootout in Oxford in college. Each quarterback threw for 350-plus yards and two touchdowns.
