The Patriots have had a lack of depth on the defensive line since training camp and now one player who could have potentially helped will not be able to.
Bill Belichick said Monday defensive tackle Beau Allen will not play this season.
Allen did not participate in any training camp session over the summer and started the season on injured reserve. He returned to practice a few weeks ago, but will not be activated to the roster and will stay on IR for the rest of the season.
[UPDATE, 5:00 p..m.]: Belichick said Allen suffered an injury in practice.
"He just won't be ready," the coach said.
Allen was signed by the Patriots to a two-year deal on March 20.
The Patriots have Lawrence Guy, Adam Butler, Byron Cowart, Carl Davis and Nick Thurman at the position.
