Apparently watching Tom Brady every Sunday was intoxicating enough for Patriots fans. They are the least buzzed in the NFL, according to a recent survey.

The betting website Lines.com surveyed 1,683 sports fans using software from Amazon. Respondents admitted they drink an average of 3.7 alcoholic beverages per game or event. Binge drinking is commonly defined as consuming four of five beverages in one sitting.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, representatives from 27 NFL fan bases said they binge drink on game days. But Patriots fans are not part of that heavily lubricated bunch. “Just” 42 percent of Patriots fans said they binge drink when the Pats take the field — the lowest total in the NFL. Less than 50 percent of Vikings (49 percent), Lions (48 percent) and Cowboys fans (46 percent) copped to drinking excessively when the game is on.

Conversely, the Falcons (86 percent), Jaguars (86 percent) and Cardinals (85 percent) have the heaviest drinking fan bases in the NFL. There is an obvious correlation between misery and alcoholic consumption. Who knew?

Even though marijuana is legal for recreational use in Massachusetts, Patriots fans are also the least likely to get high on game days, which partially explains my vitriolic Twitter mentions. You all need to chill out. (Only 31 percent said they smoke or ingest weed when the Patriots play. Our puritanical forefathers would be proud.)

Interestingly enough, the survey was taken in September 2020. I bet the results are different after being forced to watch Cam Newton play quarterback for an entire season.
