Mitchell signed a one-year deal with the Patriots during free agency this spring and looked like a contender to start at cornerback opposite Jalen Mills early in training camp. But he failed to make the 53-man roster after a fairly nondescript training camp, signing with the practice squad once he cleared waivers.

Bill Belichick never elected to protect Mitchell or any other player on the practice squad thus far, meaning they can sign with other teams' 53-man rosters at any time.

The Patriots will continue to roll with a six-man cornerback crew of Jalen Mills, Jonathan Jones, Myles Bryant, Jack Jones, Marcus Jones and Shaun Wade. Jack Jones, in particular, has continued to earn playing time at outside cornerback behind Mills and Jonathan Jones, perhaps rendering Mitchell less necessary to keep around.
