the rich keefe show: Did the Patriots move to quickly in head coach search?
Yes, you read that right.
While Patriots ownership worked swiftly too hire Jerod Mayo as the franchises next head coach, they may wait longer to hire their next general manager. A lot longer.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter on Saturday morning, the Patriots are in no rush to hire a general manager to run their personnel department. In fact, they may even wait until after the 2024 NFL Draft.
While the Patriots still have a front office intact, manned by director of player personnel Matt Groh and director of scouting Eliot Wolf, it seems a bit backwards to allow them to run the offseason (and an NFL Draft with the incredibly important No. 3 overall pick) before handing the operation over to somebody else.
Many have pointed out that New England hasn't named a true general manager since 1993, the year before the hiring of Bill Parcells, but in today's NFL, a true point person in the front office is arguably the most important job in a franchise.
NBC Sports Boston's Phil Perry additionally reported on Saturday that the Patriots "are not expected to bring in a new general manager. It’s anticipated by team sources that both Matt Groh and Eliot Wolf will remain with the Patriots and have prominent roles in personnel."
New England announced the hiring of Mayo to be their next head coach on Friday, with an introductory press conference scheduled for next Wednesday, January 17th. He's the NFL's youngest head coach at just 37 years old.
