We assumed the Patriots knew something we didn't (which is usually the case).
They needed a kicker, so when Bill Belichick and Co. took one in the fifth-round it wasn't a huge surprise. The shock came when it was identified what the name of the pick was: Justin Rohrwasser.
The Marshall product wasn't projected by many to be part of the 2020 NFL Draft, but in fairness few kickers were. Still, the fact that Rohrwasser was the Patriots' guy shocked many. Particularly considering there was one collegian who previously made some sense when it came to using a pick on the position.
Rodrigo Blankenship -- the bespectacled Lou Groza Award winner from Georgia -- was going to be the guy to be drafted. He wasn't. Not for the Patriots or any other team.
The Colts ended up signing Blankenship as a rookie free agent, giving him the opportunity to win the job in a competition with Chase McLaughlin. Well, not only did the former Bulldog earn a spot on the roster but he has now found himself the talk of the NFL after five weeks.
While Rohrwasser lives life on the Patriots' practice squad, Blankenship finished Week 5 leading the NFL in scoring. The Colts' kicker is 15-for-17 in field goal attempts and 11-for-11 on extra-points. (Disclaimer: He hasn't made a field goal of longer than 44 yards.)
Blankenship's 56 point tops Miami kicker Jason Sanders, who sits at 52. Patriots' kicker Nick Foles hasn't been terrible, making 5-of-7 field goals and 10-of-11 extra-points. His longest is 42 yards.
When it comes to identifying the next in line after Adam Vinatieri and Stephen Gostkowski, early returns suggest there seems to have been a missed opportunity.
