Ty Montgomery’s once-promising season is over.

The Boston Globe’s Jim McBride reported Wednesday that Montgomery would miss the rest of the season after undergoing shoulder surgery, according to a source.

Montgomery, who signed a one-year deal with the Patriots this past offseason, had a strong training camp and looked to be a natural successor to James White as a pass-catching running back on third downs. An ankle injury knocked him out of the preseason finale against the Los Vegas Raiders, but the veteran back returned for the season opener against Miami, scoring the Patriots’ lone touchdown of that game.

But the team placed him on injured reserve following the game, with ESPN’s Mike Reiss later revealing the injury was related to Montgomery’s upper body rather than his ankle. Now, it seems we know where the injury was located.

Montgomery finishes this year with -2 rushing yards on two carries and three catches for 15 yards and a touchdown.

The Patriots’ running back depth, meanwhile, will remain limited behind Rhamondre Stevenson and Damien Harris.
