FOXBOROUGH — Based on the first two or so weeks of Patriots training camp, there is plenty of hype in the media when it comes to rookie Mac Jones.

And it seems like it’s not just the media that’s seeing it — it’s the players, too.

“I think he can be special,” offensive tackle Trent Brown said Tuesday night when asked for his impressions of the rookie. “There’s a lot going on for him right now – this is a different ballgame, and with Bill’s defense, there’s a lot of moving parts out there. He’s just got to settle down and I think he’ll be all right.”

And why does he think he can be special?

“To be so young, I think he makes some throws that not a lot of young guys can make,” Brown said. “I think it’s all about settling down and knowing you can still play the game. It’s still football. Yeah, it’s a different level, but it’s still football. I think that goes for any rookie.”

Jones figures to see extended playing time in the preseason opener Thursday against The Washington Football Team, which would be his first real NFL action.

The No. 15 overall pick is competing with Cam Newton for the starting job and it feels like he’s building momentum towards potentially being the starter.
