The Patriots came into their first practice of the with two fewer players on their roster as, on Tuesday, the team waived QB Malik Cunningham and released LB Trey Flowers. Head coach Bill Belichick spoke on both transactions Wednesday morning:

"We did what's best for the team," the head coach explained when asked about Cunningham, who they had just signed to their active roster 10 days prior. Belichick then said that they'll try to bring him back to the practice squad if he goes unclaimed.

Does the same go for Trey Flowers? Who isn't subject to waivers as a vested veteran?

"Trey's in a little different situation," Belichick said when asked if they'd try to bring him back on the practice squad. "I'll leave that where it is. There's rules and other things involved. It's a much longer discussion."

So that's where we're at on Wednesday. One more win and two fewer players. Here's what stood out at the now 2-5 Patriots' session outside of Gillette Stadium:

Attendance:

Absent:
DE Keion White

IR:
CB Marcus Jones
DL Daniel Ekuale
CB Christian Gonzalez
LB Matthew Judon
OT Riley Reiff

Other Notes:

- Linebacker Josh Uche was back at practice after missing Sunday's game against the Bills.

- Rookie Keion White, who is dealing with a concussion, was still absent from practice. He was the lone player missing.

- Practice squadders Calvin Munson and Joe Giles-Harris were in black jersey's on Wednesday, indicating that they're the practice players of the week.

- An interesting observation: WR Tyquan Thornton got some individual work with ST coordinator Cam Achord, Matthew Slater, and Brenden Schooler.
