jones and mego: mac jones joins the show following patriots 10-7 loss to giants
Patriots quarterback Mac Jones was benched, in favor of backup Bailey Zappe, for the fourth (!!) time this season during the team's 10-7 loss to the New York Giants on Sunday.
Through 30 minutes of football (if you even want to call it that) the third-year signal caller completed just 12 of 21 pass attempts for 89 yards, and threw two inexcusable interceptions. He also fumbled, but luckily recovered it before potentially turning the ball over for a third time.
Amid New England's 2-9 start and Jones' worst season as a pro, many have suggested that a mental reset, perhaps sitting out for a week or even completely changing teams the offseason, may benefit the quarterback. Jones himself, however, doesn’t see that as necessary. He was asked about a 'fresh start' on WEEI’s Jones and Mego on Monday afternoon:
“I’m good right now,” the QB responded to the suggestion. “I really wanna be the quarterback here. I’ve always wanted to be a quarterback in the NFL, and specifically for the Patriots.”
He continued:
“Like I said, I’ve got a lot of room to grow, and everything, and I’m just going to continue to work hard and do all the things I can to put myself in a position to have success.”
Throughout the course of the week leading up to Sunday's game, Bill Belichick seemingly hung the starting job over his quarterbacks' heads, refusing to name a starter, at least publicly, prior to the contest. Jones was asked on Monday what his 1-on-1 conversations have been like with his head coach this season:
"I definitely think it varies from week to week,” The quarterback explained. “I try to communicate with people and get input and find out ways I can be better, so that's what I always try to do. Whether it's the quarterback coach or the head coach, or anything, anywhere I've been that's what I've always done. At the end of the day, I put the work in, and I’ve got to go out there and be the best I can be. There’s a lot of variables each week that change, but for me I just need to go out there and control what I can control.”
Jones also spoke about New England’s locker room reportedly being ‘out’ on him, if he has the ‘yips’, and more on Monday’s edition of Jones and Mego. You can listen to the full interview here.
