If Cam Newton doesn’t win starting QB job, will he even be on roster?

Training camp is just a few short weeks away and to get ready for it, we will be unveiling a 21 questions about the Patriots series relating to the upcoming season. Be sure to check back almost every day to see a new question.

If Cam Newton doesn’t win starting QB job, will he even be on roster?

This is another good question and one that is worth keeping an eye on as the summer progresses.

Newton has said numerous times over the last year-plus that he believes he is still a starting NFL quarterback, so if Mac Jones wins the starting job, does Newton request to be cut? Or does he accept it and stick around as a backup?

New England still has Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer, so it’s not like it would necessarily need Newton at that point.

The veteran was the ideal teammate last year, but would that still be the case as the backup quarterback? Newton showed a few signs of frustration during the spring when he wasn’t performing well and Jones was, so that dynamic is certainly something to monitor.

One thing to consider is the Patriots could potentially use both quarterbacks with Newton obviously focusing more on being a runner. Some have thrown out the idea of using Newton in the red zone and even have noticed Newton has bulked up this offseason, a sign he may be used more as a runner in 2021.

But, what are some examples of having a two-quarterback system that works? There aren’t many.

As of now, our gut says if Newton does not win the starting quarterback job he will be released and given the chance to find another opportunity.

Do you agree?
