Patriots release running back Antonio Gibson

The Patriots have released running back Antonio Gibson less than two years after signing him as a free agent.

Gibson joined New England as an unrestricted free agent in March, 2024. He was originally drafted by the Washington Commanders in the third round of the 2020 draft and played three season with the club.

His promising 2025 season was cut short when he tore his ACL against the Buffalo Bills on October 5, 2025. Prior to his injury, his 90-yard kickoff return against the Miami Dolphins helped the Patriots secure their first victory of the season and earned him AFC Special Teams Player of the Week.

CBS NFL Insider Jonathan Jones notes New England will save $3.1 million against the salary cap with the move. Running backs Rhamondre Stevenson, TreVeyon Henderson, and Terrell Jennings remain on the roster.
