The Patriots are releasing linebacker Kyle Van Noy, according to ESPN's Field Yates.

Yates and Mike Reiss both report that the move is about finances more than anything. Releasing the soon-to-be 31-year-old frees up nearly $5 million in cap space, which nearly doubles New England's available cap space.

Van Noy returned for a second stint in Foxboro last season after being released by the Miami Dolphins. He played 16 games, starting eight of them, and recorded 66 tackles, five sacks and an interception.

Van Noy previously spent three and a half seasons with the Patriots from 2016-19. He is now free to sign with any other team.
