Hello again, old friend. For it seems a familiar face has returned to Foxborough... or in this case Palm Beach, and possibly Miami Gardens, just before the start of the 2022 season.
According to Field Yates of ESPN, the Patriots hosted and signed Marcus Cannon to the practice squad Thursday in advance of Sunday’s opener vs. the Dolphins.
Who's going to win the AFC?
Cannon, who has significant organizational familiarity since he played with the Pats from 2011-20, could potentially provide depth at guard (his collegiate position), as well as right tackle. Starting right tackle Isaiah Wynn has been battling a back injury and has been limited in practice this week ahead of Sunday’s game (seems like something a Pats writer could cut and paste from almost any week, sadly).
Plus, Wynn and left tackle Trent Brown haven’t had their best preseason to date, so any quality veteran depth is welcome. Not exactly the best sign of a healthy cohesive line before a season kicks off but, well, it is what it is.
As for this opener? James Ferentz has already been elevated from the practice squad to the roster this week, so it’s unlikely Cannon goes from unemployed to active in just three days time. Yet if the Patriots deemed Cannon knowledgeable enough of the system, and physically well enough to play, perhaps his addition could help shore up an O-line that has been a nagging concern for fan and media alike this preseason.
