Patriots continue QB overhaul with talented sixth-round pick Joe Milton III

A year removed from having one of the least impressive or physically talented quarterback rooms in all of football, the overhaul of the position this offseason continued in the sixth round (193 overall) of the 2024 NFL Draft with the addition of physical freak prospect Joe Milton III.

The former Michigan and most recently Tennessee star is a 6-5, 246-pound specimen with a massive arm and a 4.6 40 time. Milton is capable of highlight reel throws or runs, although there is no question he’s a developmental prospect with a lot of refinement of his game needed.

Still, joining first-round pick Drake Maye and offseason veteran free agent addition Jacoby Brissett, New England now has a QB depth chart that includes much more size and arm strength than in the recent years when Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe, who remains on the team for now, led the mix.

Milton spent three seasons at Michigan to open his college career, starting five of the 14 games he played before transferring to Tennessee where he spent two seasons as a backup. Last fall he started all 12 games and finished completing 64 percent of his passes for 2,800 yards with 20 touchdowns and five interceptions. He also ran for another 300 yards with seven touchdowns.

As many clips around social media can attest, Milton throws the ball in ways that few humans can. He showed his stuff admirably at the NFL Scouting Combine and his pro day. The 24-year-old prospect is also a cousin of former star NFL receiver Anquan Boldin.

The Athletics’ summation of Milton’s ability in his draft profile say it all of his rare, raw abilities and professional future: “Overall, Milton has the physical tools that scream first-round pick, but his passing instincts and ability to read the field are undeveloped. He is a project quarterback prospect, and some teams believe he will eventually transition to tight end in the NFL (similar path as Logan Thomas).”

Whether he ends up as a developmental prospect, long term backup to Maye, raw preseason/training camp marvel or an athlete asked to play another position, Milton is one of the more intriguing sixth-round options that any team could have added. And a sixth-round QB who played at Michigan? Where have we heard that before?

Milton’s arrival along with Maye atop the draft would also seem to indicate that Zappe or Nathan Rourke may not be long for the roster, with both likely facing an uphill battle of making it to the 2024 season on the roster.
