Now that the Patriots have hired their next head coach in Jerod Mayo, they will reportedly begin a search for a general manager to run their front office.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, New England will "now work to hire a GM to work with Jerod Mayo, as the organization gets a total facelift."

The Patriots haven't had a true general manager run their front office since 1990, as they've mostly relied on those in the front office or their head coach to handle duties in a de facto role.

During Bill Belichick's 24-year tenure in Foxborough, he served as the de facto GM and had final say on all personnel decisions for the franchise. He famously leaned on executives Scott Pioli, Nick Caserio, Dave Ziegler, and Matt Groh throughout his career.

Potential candidates with Patriots ties include Jon Robinson, Dave Ziegler, Trey Brown, and Mike Borgonzi.

Additionally, it was reported by the Boston Globe's Ben Volin earlier this week that Pioli, who we mentioned above, "has been communicating" with team ownership in recent weeks and “would be open to returning to the Patriots with or without (Bill) Belichick."

Pioli, 58, served as New England's assistant director of player personnel in 2000, their director of player personnel in 2001, and their vice president of player personnel from 2002-2008.
