Really anything can happen with the Patriots in the NFL Draft, which will begin in less than two weeks.
Clearly, they are in the quarterback market, but many differ on what exactly happen when it comes to it. Some think Bill Belichick will move from No. 15 into the top 10 to secure one of the top five players at the position, while others think that’s too big of a jump for the fourth or fifth quarterback to come off the board.
Appearing on Ordway, Merloni & Fauria, ESPN’s Matt Miller was all-in on Justin Fields and believes he would put the Patriots in a position to get back to where they were for the better part of the last 20 years.
“You have the greatest head coach of all time and a good team,” he said. “They won seven games last year with just completely incompetent offensive play. No wide receivers, Cam [Newton] gets COVID, there was no preseason for anyone to gel and acclimate together. If you draft Justin Fields and you say, ‘Alright, we’re going to take this a little slow. You’ll probably beat Cam Newton out by like the bye week.’ That’s what we see happen. We saw it with Tua [Tagovailoa] last year, Justin Herbert last year. If you’re drafted early, you work your way into the starting lineup.
“I do think they would be a Super Bowl contender very, very soon because I believe in Justin Fields that much and also it’s a pretty safe bet to say Bill Belichick is going to be back in the Super Bowl soon. It’s probably going to happen. I think the moves they made this year point to them reloading, being super competitive again. We saw Tom [Brady] get one without Bill and I think Bill is going to be pissed off, ready to go and try and get his own without Tom.”
Miller also said if the Patriots do indeed want one of the best quarterbacks, the safest and surest bet would be trading up to No. 4 overall because there will be other teams looking to do the same thing.
