There was a controversial play at the end of the first half between the Patriots and Bills on Sunday.
Following a unnecessary roughness penalty for a late hit on Mac Jones, it was first-and-10 for the Patriots on their own 40-yard line with 1:29 left on the clock. Jones scrambled for seven yards and was pushed by Jerry Hughes as he neared the Bills sideline.
A flag was thrown as Jones went down to the ground, but after a conference it was picked up. Here’s what referee said via the pool report on why.
“What we ruled was, we had contact on the sideline,” Shawn Smith said. “And after discussion, we determined that it was incidental contact that didn’t rise to a level of a personal foul. There was no second act by the defender in that situation, so we determined there was no foul, based on that action.”
The Patriots were very upset with this and even led to Trent Brown getting an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty before the next play.
Jones didn’t think it was that big of a deal.
“I just ran and got out-of-bounds. I don't know what happened from there,” he said. “Just my knee brace kind of did a little thing there so I was just trying to get it off. There was nothing, I mean, there was nothing more to it.”
Here’s video of the play.
