Rex Ryan never misses a chance to criticize longtime nemesis Bill Belichick, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that he’s joining the chorus of those doing so after the Patriots’ lackluster Week 1 loss to the Dolphins.
Is there a Belichick vs. Kraft battle brewing?
The former Jets and Bills head coach took aim at Belichick’s roster construction on ESPN’s “Get Up!” this week, saying that New England doesn’t have enough talent on offense because Belichick has whiffed on too many moves.
“It’s his decision. Every factor in that organization is Bill Belichick’s decision,” Ryan said. “He earned that right, but going back to last year, bringing in Nelson Agholor, how’s that working for you? Don’t complain about the weapons. You chose those weapons. The kid from San Francisco, Kendrick Bourne. You trade for DeVante Parker.
“Nobody can get open. Nobody can get open. To me, every one of those moves you made, they haven’t worked out. N’Keal Harry, you traded him. That never worked out. All these moves that you’ve made, you have no weapons. One of the reasons is because you can’t evaluate them. You’ve done a poor job evaluating the weapons.”
Ryan also ripped Belichick’s decision to have Matt Patricia and Joe Judge run the offense following Josh McDaniels’ departure and said second-year quarterback Mac Jones deserves better.
“You have a very smart kid at quarterback. Smart enough to know that Matt Patricia and Joe Judge probably ain't that good a football coach for him, I mean offensive coaching-wise,” Ryan said.
“To me, Belichick, this is going to be a long-ass year,” he concluded.
It's worth noting that the Patriots did actually rank sixth in the NFL in points per game last season with 27.2, but it is admittedly hard to see them getting back to that mark right now with the way the offense has looked.
