Running back was an under-the-radar need for the Patriots and they addressed it in Round 4 by selecting Oklahoma running back Rhamondre Stevenson.

A bigger back, close to 230 pounds, Stevenson is known for his physical running style, but also can catch the ball out of the backfield and excel in pass protection.

Speaking on a conference call after the pick, Stevenson admitted he was a little surprised by the selection.

“I had more conversations with teams other than the Patriots,” he said. “I think that is because the Patriots had a good idea on me. We had a great Zoom interview. I don’t think they really needed to talk to me. It was just a surprise because I hadn’t been communicating with them as much as other teams.”

He said the Zoom interview was with running backs coach Ivan Fears as well as a few scouts.

Stevenson will continue to be teammates with Ronnie Perkins, who the Patriots selected in the third round.

“It's crazy we got drafted by the same team,” he said.

It’s unclear what his role might be in 2021, as he could have a redshirt type season like the Patriots have historically done with their backs, but he’s looking forward to joining the organization.

“It’s a great feeling just knowing I’ve got Bill Belichick as the head coach,” Stevenson said. “He’s a great coach. He’s a genius. He loves what he does. I know he’s going to coach me hard as well as the other people on the coaching staff. I am just excited.”
