When Bears tight end Trey Burton was released Friday, it got the attention of Patriots fans given the need at the position.
But, don't get to excited.
According to The Athletic's Jeff Howe, it's a long shot as of now that Burton ends up with the Patriots.
It seems likely the team will address the position via the draft, but it also needs another veteran who has some experience. Right now, the Patriots only have Matt LaCosse and Ryan Izzo on their depth chart. New England got the worst production from the position in the entire league last year.
In eight games last season, Burton had just 14 catches for 84 yards. The 28-year-old had his best season in 2018 when he finished with 54 receptions for 569 yards and six touchdowns.
He's most known to Patriots fans when he threw a touchdown pass to Nick Foles against New England in Super Bowl LII.
