Report: Patriots 'floated' Stephon Gilmore in offseason trade talks

According to a report from MMQB/NBC Sports Boston, the Patriots offered up reigning Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore in trade talks this offseason and summer.

The report indicates that Gilmore's name was "floated in trade discussions with other teams both before the draft and during training camp."

Gilmore missed a couple days of practice during training camp that Bill Belichick deemed as "excused," though some speculated at the time that the absence could be contract related. Gilmore himself dismissed that idea.

This actually week New England reworked Gilmore's contract to give him a pay-bump of $5 million in salary for 2020 and give him the chance to earn as much as $17 million this season, more in line with a cornerback contract market that has exploded over the last year.
