Not only does the Sam Darnold trade earlier in the week impact the NFL Draft relating to the quarterbacks, it could also make a veteran available via trade.
With Carolina now having Darnold, Teddy Bridgewater could be made available, according to multiple reports.
Appearing on Gresh & Keefe Tuesday, NBC Sports’ Tom E. Curran made the case for the Patriots to try and acquire Bridgewater.
“I think Teddy Bridgewater and Jimmy Garoppolo are inter-flipping-changeable,” he said. “If you are of the mind, which I am, that Mac Jones or Trey Lance are too much of a projection to spend a first-round pick on, upgrade your quarterback position from Jarrett Stidham and Cam Newton with Teddy Bridgewater and you’re in a better spot than you were. If you don’t get the guy in the draft that you want, go get Teddy Bridgewater. It’s $17 million and have him come in and compete. Cam is already on notice that he has to compete. … Bring him in.”
Bridgewater, 28, started 15 games last year, completing 69% of his passes for 3,733 yards to go along with 15 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He also added five rushing touchdowns.
The Patriots would likely have to create cap space to bring Bridgewater aboard, but that wouldn’t be a roadblock to a deal if the team were to in fact be seriously interested.
