Tre Nixon has to know he had everyone buzzing after starring in Patriots spring practices, repeatedly hauling in deep throws and looking like the best receiver on the team in the sessions media were allowed to observe.
But there's no way he's going to let that go to his head.
"I really haven't done anything yet," he told the "1st and Foxborough" podcast in a one-on-one conversation after Thursday's practice. "I haven't caught one pass in the NFL. I haven't played in a regular season game. I haven't even been on the roster yet.
"For me, making plays in OTAs and minicamp are nice, but…I've gotta do it when it matters."
There was Nixon again on Thursday, using his quickness to beat coverage and catch a touchdown pass from Bailey Zappe out of the slot during 7-on-7s.
But you can also see the 2021 seventh-round pick fielding punts, which he said he never did in college or high school, before practice as he looks to prove his worth in whatever way he can: "Wherever the team needs me, kickoff, punt return, inside, outside, I'm willing to do."
As of now, Nixon will be in contention for a final spot in the receiver room, especially if Ty Montgomery plays more running back with James White potentially standing on PUP and injured reserve all season. And the real work will begin in earnest when the pads come on Monday.
