the greg hill show: ty Law joins, says he's on the fence about Bill's future
Hall of Fame cornerback Ty Law is the latest former Patriot to give his opinion on who the next head coach in New England should be.
The three-time Super Bowl Champion, during his weekly "Ty Tuesday" appearance on WEEI's The Greg Hill Show, was asked who the Patriots' head coach should be next season if it's not Bill Belichick:
"I would like to see Jerod Mayo get an opportunity," Law explained. "Because I think he has respect from, especially around here, he has respect from players as a former player, which you don't have a lot of former players [coaching]."
Law went on to say that he thinks Mayo could bring to New England what interim head coach Antonio Pierce has brought to the Raiders since they fired Josh McDaniels.
"You see what's going on [in Las Vegas]," he continued. "I think that's a direct result of him being able to relate to the players in a certain way. And he's got those boys playing. He played that position, that leadership position, as a linebacker. You have the same thing with Jerod Mayo. He's been coaching under Bill Belichick. He knows how to coach. He can go find the players and maybe he can get to them in a different way."
Last March at the 2023 NFL owners meetings, Robert Kraft told NFL Network that Mayo is a "strong candidate to be the heir apparent" to Bill Belichick, and inside linebackers coach himself has expressed interest in being a head coach one day, having taking interviews with the Broncos, Raiders, and Eagles in the past.
However, just last week ESPN's Dan Graziano reported that some in the Patriots building "are no longer certain" Mayo is the way that Robert Kraft would go. He went on to say that "Mayo would have to sell Kraft on who will be in charge of the offense, the quarterback's development, and personnel. That could all happen and work out in Mayo's favor, but it doesn't sound like it's a 100% sure thing."
Additionally, Boston Sports Journal's Greg Bedard reported that Mayo has "rubbed at least some people the wrong way" in the building since his contract extension last offseason.
Either way, Law is still sold on him:
"I would love to see Jerod Mayo get an opportunity to be a head coach, and be the head coach for the Patriots. That'd be one hell of a story."
