6 rings prospect preview: quarterbacks
With the Patriots holding the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, they've really only been connected to a handful of first-round prospects.
One of the more common ones? Quarterback Drake Maye.
Ahead of the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Indiana this week, the former North Carolina signal-caller joined The Adam Schefter podcast, and among other things mentioned the possibility of playing in New England:
“New England, I mean, it's hard not to talk about The Dynasty,” said Maye. “You know, you think of the GOAT. That’s what you think of when you think of New England you think of the GOAT, Tom Brady. So, just a place with— that’s had a lot of success and had some years lately that they haven't been as successful and looking to get back on track and I know that's, you know, right there near Boston.”
“These are three great sports towns you’re talking about now,” he continued, looking in New England with Washington D.C. and Chicago. “So, all great places to play and, you know, I think a great spot to be a, you know, franchise quarterback at and that’s what I’m working towards.”
The 6-foot-4 230-pound Maye threw for 7,929 yards and 72 touchdowns over two seasons as the Tar Heels starting quarterback, and added added 1,147 rushing yards and 17 scores on the ground. His “pass-first, but athletic” play style would undoubtedly fit well with the West Coast-adjacent system Patriots new offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt will likely look to run.
The first round of the NFL Draft will take place on Thursday, April 25th.
