Through two games this season, Patriots tight end Ryan Izzo has played virtually all of the offensive snaps (98 and 97 percent in the two games).
This is a huge increase for a player who only had six games of NFL experience heading into this year and didn’t even play all that much in those games.
Despite being 24 years old and having limited experience, Izzo is now the leader at the tight end position with two rookies behind him — Devin Asiasi and Dalton Keene.
“I think it happened quick for me,” Izzo said Wednesday. “First, coming in with Gronk and having Dwayne Allen, those really good veterans to be under. Now that they’re out, I am the oldest guy in the room just trying to set an example like they did for me.”
Izzo has also been a factor in the passing game, totaling three receptions for 44 yards in the two games, picking up first downs on two of his three catches.
“It’s been awesome. I am really happy about it,” he said. “I think it is attributed to all the hard work that I put in. Just moving forward I am just trying to keep being somebody the team can count on. Just being consistent and doing whatever I can to help them.”
What’s been the biggest difference?
“I think overall physically I made some leaps this past offseason,” Izzo said. “I really worked hard in the weight room and on the field. Playbook wise, I definitely feel more comfortable. I think once you start getting those years under your belt, you get comfortable with the details and how coaches want things done. It just helps.”
The Patriots were patient with Izzo the last few seasons and now it’s paying off.
