While Stephon Gilmore is not a free agent, his situation is worth watching over the next few weeks.

The 30-year-old is only due to get paid just over $7 million this season after a restructure last year, and that does not appear to be something he's willing to do.

NFL Media's Mike Giardi shared the latest during an appearance on the NFL Network Sunday.

“You mentioned the money and this is the big thing to me, they adjusted his deal, they moved money from this year into the previous season," he said. "So, he got more money last year to play. This year, I believe the cap hit is $7 million. Now, I will put this down, you can write it in pen, he’s not playing for $7 million, and they don’t expect him to play for $7 million. That is just not going to work for a guy who two years ago was the Defensive Player of the Year and last year after a slow start started playing at that same level.

“They’ve had some conversations, I don’t know if they are close to getting anything done and I think if they don’t get anything done in that regard and getting him paid what he needs to be paid as one of the top players at that position, then you’re going to see a situation where they are going to butt heads and that would probably lead to Stephon Gilmore being out of town, but again plenty of time to figure that out here.”

Giardi also added that even though Gilmore had knee surgery towards the end of last year, he is healthy now working out in Miami and would be ready for spring workouts if the league allows them to happen.

It will be interesting to see what his trade market would be as whatever team is acquiring him has to know it has to redo his contract, which expires at the end of the season.
