Through six weeks, the Patriots are 2-4 and have had some difficult losses along the way with a key units on the team underperforming from what many expected going into the season.
Quarterback play is not one of them, as Mac Jones has looked very solid through the first six games of his NFL career.
Jones is completing 71.1% of his passes for 1,472 yards with seven touchdowns and six interceptions.
Those are good numbers, so where does Pro Football Focus have him compared to the rest of the other quarterbacks in the league?
Jones currently has a 79.7 offensive grade, which is 16th. For a comparison, Andy Dalton is 15th (80.1) and Jalen Hurts is 17th (79.0). The top five has Tom Brady (92.3), Russell Wilson (90.3), Kirk Cousins (89.9), Ryan Tannehill (87.5) and Justin Herbert (86.8).
The Patriots rookie is even graded higher than Patrick Mahomes (19th, 78.2) and Aaron Rodgers (21st, 77.2). This certainly does not put much value into PFF's grades, as no one is saying Jones is better than these two NFL superstars, but it does show Jones is playing at a high level through six weeks.
“I think it’s more about the process and figuring out what works for me and what works for our team," Jones said. "We don’t want to look back, but I think the games we’ve lost, they are super close. One play here or there our record would say something completely different. It’s the National Football League and the margin for error is so slim that you just have to be on your ‘A’ game. I’m young and I am starting to realize that. The sense of urgency just needs to improve by me in whatever way I can help the team through in that area.”
The Patriots and Jones will host the Jets this Sunday.
