Things don’t seem to be going well in Green Bay and it’s not just with Aaron Rodgers.
According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, wide receiver Davante Adams and the Packers have broken off long-term extension talks with no current plans to resume them. The report adds the two sides have been negotiating for months, but they are now in a bad place.
Adams is scheduled to be a free agent after the season and carries a $16.7 million cap hit for 2021.
While Green Bay could just play things out with Adams for this year, they could also look to the future and trade him before getting nothing for him this offseason.
The Patriots could certainly use a No. 1 receiver, so what about this trade?
Patriots get: Davante Adams
Packers get: N’Keal Harry, Patriots’ 2022 second-round pick
Adams is obviously one of the best receivers in the game, but since he only has one year left on his contract he likely wouldn’t get a first-round pick in return — at least from New England. Green Bay would add a high draft pick next year and while Harry is a throw-in, who knows what it could do with him. A change in scenery is what the 2019 first-round pick needs.
Then for the Patriots, they need a No. 1 wide receiver not just for this year, but the years to come. Trading for Adams would come with a contract extension, which could help lower the cap hit for this season. With him being 28 years old, it could be for four or five years. Adams would help Mac Jones in a big way and who knows what the two could do together.
NFL trades do not happen very often, especially involving players, but the Patriots should at least pick up the phone and see if it’s even an option.
