Bill Belichick has simple reason for Patriots not protecting any players on practice squad

The NFL's practice squad rules are a lot different in 2020.

First off, practice squads have 16 players instead of 10 and veterans are allowed to be on it even if in past years they did not have eligibility. In addition, teams can protect up to four players each week on their practice squad not to be signed by another team and go on its active roster.

The Patriots were one of the few teams in the league not to protect any players this week.

Speaking via video conference Friday, Bill Belichick was asked why and he had a simple answer.

"Because we didn't want to," he said.

In addition, two players can be promoted to the active roster each week, but a player can only be promoted twice during the season.

As for this week, one of the two will likely be a kicker, either Nick Folk and Justin Rohrwasser.
