After 11 games with the big league club, Michael Chavis was sent back down to Triple-A Worcester following the weekend series with the Phillies to make room for Christian Arroyo.
Appearing on Ordway, Merloni & Fauria Wednesday, manager Alex Cora explained why Chavis playing in Triple-A makes most sense.
“I do believe Michael has to go to Triple-A and keep getting better," he said. "We have Christian Arroyo, he plays second, short, third. He can play first. He’s a right-handed hitter. We decided to keep Christian in spring training for all the right reasons. He’s a guy coming off the IL.
“Michael needs to go down there and get his at-bats. The at-bats are limited right now, even from Franchy [Cordero]. So, in this situation it makes more sense sending Michael to Triple-A, having Christian here. We’re in a spot right now, we have 13 pitchers and 13 position players. That might change with one game, you never know. We’ll keep it where it is at right now. I think Franchy can give us power off the bench if we use him. He can run, he can go out there and play defense. You have to take in consideration Alex [Verdugo] is a little banged up right now, too. There’s a lot of stuff that goes into this, for this decision. But, for the player I do believe playing regularly in Triple-A it makes more sense for him."
In 33 Triple-A at-bats this year, Chavis is hitting .273 with one home run.
