Chaim Bloom responds to Chris Sale walloping TV after rehab start

Nobody took Chris Sale’s performance in Worcester on Wednesday harder than the dugout television.

Sale is inching back from a rib stress fracture, and his rehab start Wednesday for the Red Sox’s Triple-A affiliate signaled what might have been his final minor league appearance before returning to Boston’s rotation.

While his stuff wasn’t terrible, Sale was erratic and an inability to locate pitches marred his outing. He lasted 3.2 innings, surrendering one run on three hits while striking out five and walking five. When he was pulled after issuing a bases-loaded walk, he returned to the dugout and gave the television in the tunnel a solid beating before returning to the bench.

The video went viral, and appearing on WEEI’s “The Greg Hill Show” on Thursday, Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom offered his reaction.

“I did see the video. I have not talked to anybody, including Chris, about that, but I did see the video," Bloom said. "Look, I’m not going to sit here and condone property damage, but he is a competitor. That’s who he is. There are plenty of guys, including somebody we all love who is going into Cooperstown later this month (David Ortiz) who have been caught on tape doing stuff like that when they’re frustrated during a ballgame. It happens, it probably happens more than people think, and with guys that you might never suspect.

“So, it’s never something that we condone, but there’s a lot of passion in this game and when you have someone who holds himself to as high a standard as Chris does and who cares as much as he does, sometimes that passion is going to express itself in different ways.”

Sale, as Bloom alludes to, has widely been lauded in the past for his competitive fire. The TV debacle might have rubbed some the wrong way, but Sale is getting back into game action for the first time in a while, so we shouldn’t be surprised to see him so amped up.
