BOSTON (WEEI) -- In a stunning move, it appears Blake Swihart is done with the Boston Red Sox.
Swihart has been designated for assignment by the team, according to Evan Drellich. Swihart likely will not pass through waivers, which would mean his time with the organization is over.
Swihart has played 12 games this season and is 6-for-26 (.231) with four RBI. He was selected No. 26 overall in the 2011 draft and is known for his bat, but hasn't been able to find consistent playing time as the team has moved him around in the field a bunch.
WEEI.com's Rob Bradford adds Sandy Leon is being called up as the corresponding move. The veteran catcher did not make the Opening Day roster, but pitchers have said in the past how much they like having him behind the plate. That could be one of the reasons why Swihart was DFA'd as the team looks to improve its performance from the mound.
Red Sox starters are 2-10 this season with a 7.18 ERA.
Alex Cora was set to meet with the media Tuesday afternoon in New York before the Red Sox take on the Yankees.
