Another example of how Alex Bregman is perfectly suited for new role as Red Sox mentor

Trevor Story is off to an insanely good start

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The surprises just keep coming for Marcelo Mayer, Roman Anthony and Kristian Campbell. For that, they can thanks their locker neighbor, Alex Bregman.

A few weeks after the veteran infielder introduced himself to the Red Sox' top prospects with an hour-long impromptu meal in the JetBlue Park cafeteria, Bregman offered another surprise.

He bought all of them suits.

"It's the sickest thing ever. It was my first suit," Mayer told WEEI.com. "We got to the field one day and he's like, 'Hey, the suit lady is outside. Go get whatever you want.' Me, Roman and Kristian and some other guys. He took good care of us. It was cool. He's such a great guy. He wants us to feel comfortable here."

Bregman understood the feeling such a gesture would elicit. After all, he had once been on the other end of the equation.

"My first year getting on the (Astros) ball club, (Carlos) Beltran, (Brian) McCann and (Josh) Reddick, all those guys, would take care of all of us, getting us suits or cologne or something," he remembered. "It was awesome. It just made me feel great at the time. I was super thankful for them. When we got some veteran players my first year in the big leagues I felt like they welcomed us in with open arms and kind of showed us the ropes of the big leagues. I will just be forever grateful."

Now it's Mayer and Co. who have that feeling.

As for the style of suits, the 22-year-old shortstop - who never even got a chance to wear a suit for a prom due to Covid - is easing into things. Saying "First suit so I wanted to keep it a little classy. Just Navy Blue."

There will be time for the evolution of his suit game, having already talked with Jarren Duran about the opportunity to take attire to the next level as an MLB All-Star.

"I was thinking about that. That one I might go a little more crazy," said Mayer said with a smile.

For now, Bregman has allowed for something more powerful than bright-colored fabric or personalized jackets. This was a moment these young players will never forget.

"It was truly incredible and something I will never forget," Mayer said.
