Alex Cora says no load management for Brayan Bello, Lucas Giolito down the stretch

Ahead of yet another strong start for Brayan Bello (10-6, 2.99 ERA) on Wednesday, Red Sox manager Alex Cora joined WEEI Afternoons for his weekly appearance on the show.

With both Bello and Lucas Giolito (9-2, 3.47 ERA) both having huge bounce back seasons as Boston’s No. 2 and No. 3 starters behind AL Cy Young candidate Garrett Crochet (14-5, 2.38 ERA), the Red Sox (74-60) are sporting a playoff-caliber starting rotation for the first time in years as the regular season winds down.

But with Bello never having pitched deep into October in his career and with Giolito not having thrown over 170 innings in a single season since 2023, it’s fair to wonder how the wear and tear of an October run could impact each players’ performance down the stretch.

“Will there be any sort of load management or workload plan for Bello and Giolito as well?” WEEI’s Nick “Fitzy” Stevens asked Cora on Wednesday.

“No, not as of now,” said Cora. “We feel they're in a good spot physically. Health wise they've been great. They've been able to bounce back.

“And we got work to do. You know, we still got 29 more games, and a lot of teams are playing well around us. We still have our goal set [of winning] the division, so we gotta keep going.”

The Red Sox will go for a four-game sweep of the Orioles (60-73) on Thursday afternoon in Baltimore, with Crochet slated to take the mound. Baltimore will throw lefty Cade Povich (2-7, 5.13 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. ET
