David Ortiz has been on-point with his speeches of late, particularly the one he put together while accepting his induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.
Appearing on the WEEI Shaws and Star Market Red Sox Network broadcast with Sean McDonough and Joe Castiglione Wednesday night, Ortiz offered some insight into how he approached the Hall of Fame speech.
Of particular note was the revelation that the former Red Sox saved mentions of his parents for the end, knowing how emotional the portion would be.
As Ortiz revealed, not was the emotion spurned on by the memory of his late mother, Angela Rosa Arias, but the presence of his father, Americo Enrique Ortiz, who is battling cancer.
"I left my Mom and Dad for last because of it. My Dad is a little sick. He is here with me. He’s fighting cancer," Ortiz said. "And I lost my Mom. It’s something I get very emotional talking about them. They taught me everything. I would not be the man I am without them."
