David Price's season is not going as planned

David Price certainly wasn't the centerpiece of the Red Sox' deal with the Dodgers heading into last season. That honor would obviously have gone to Mookie Betts.

But at the time of the swap, Price still had value. Up until running into physical issues, the lefty's last season with the Red Sox had seen him total a 3.86 ERA in 20 starts through the end of July.

Price, however, was deemed expendable, with the Red Sox valuing the opportunity to free up money from his contract over any potential production the lefty might offer in the starting rotation.

When it came to that part of the deal, the Dodgers' have definitely gotten the short-end of the bargain.

The latest obstacle for Price has come in the form of a trip to the 10-day injured list due to a hamstring injury.

Even before the injury, Price's existence hardly resembled what the Dodger most likely envisioned when securing his services. After sitting out all of the 2020 season, he has solely pitched out of the Los Angeles bullpen, compiling a 5.59 ERA in seven appearances.

Price did go on a run of four straight scoreless appearances before succumbing to a two-run, three-hit, one-inning outing against the Padres his last time out.

Price is owed $32 million both this season and next, finishing off the seven-year, $217 million deal signed by the Red Sox heading into the 2016 season.
