KANSAS CITY - This was not the normal first day of work.
Eric Hosmer's introduction to life as a Red Sox was ... a lot.
The day started by joining his new teammates in a team meeting reset with manager Alex Cora, with Hosmer being introduced as a solution to what might have been some part of the team's problems heading into the final two months.
Then came the re-introduction.
Along with finding his bearings in a new uniform and with a new team, Hosmer's day also included soaking in his first return to Kaufman Stadium since leaving the Royals in 2017.
The memories. The details of how he landed with the Red Sox. The what-might-have-been and what actually was. It was displayed during his press conference three hours before first pitch.
And then, just before taking the field for the first time as a Red Sox, Hosmer was put on center stage one last night thanks to the Royals enormous Jumbotron scoreboard.
As for actually playing baseball, Hosmer almost made another memory in his first at-bat, rocketing a fly ball into center field. Unfortunately for the newest Red Sox, it simply resulted in a 412-foot out.
By day's end, Hosmer had gone 0-for-3 with a walk in the Red Sox' 7-3 loss. Still, he couldn't help but smile when talking about to the media just before leaving for the day. It was a day of good memories, some older than others.
"It was fun to be back. It has been a long time," Hosmer said. "Good to get acclimated with all the guys here. Fun group. Good group. Group that wants to win, so it seems like there are going to be some fun times here.
"It was special. Just a long time since I’ve been back here and then just kind of rolling through memory lane really quick. That highlight video brought back some memories … Glad to get all that stuff out of the way in the most humble way possible. Now we can get back to winning some ballgames and that being the main focus."
