The Boston Red Sox undoubtedly are hoping that Trevor Story is the piece that pushes them to the next level.

After bowing out of the 2021 postseason in Game 6 of the American League Championship Series against the Houston Astros, the Sox got one of the top free agents on the market in Story. Historically a shortstop, he figures to be a second baseman, at least in the short term, in Boston.

There are some concerns around Story. He is considered a potential candidate for Tommy John surgery because of shoulder issues, and he’s coming off one of his worst statistical seasons. But for former big league infielder Trevor Plouffe, a conversation with Story told him all he needed to know about what kind of player the longtime Colorado Rockie is.

"I like this move for them," Plouffe said during Monday's episode of "Baseball Today". "Trevor Story – I’ve said it before on this show – he came on 'Talkin' Baseball.' After he came on 'Talkin' Baseball' I said any team is lucky to have this guy in the organization, and I think the Red Sox are going to cherish this guy. People in Boston, you’re going to love him because he works hard and all he wants to do is play baseball, that’s all this guy likes to do. You’ve got a good one."

You can listen to the interview with Story that Plouffe alludes to below (or here). It was recorded in May of last season when Story was still with the Rockies.

Should Story rebound, he’ll be a potent offensive addition to the Red Sox lineup who is more than capable defensively, too.

This is the first big swing of the Chaim Bloom era, and Plouffe’s assessment should inspire optimism that Story could be a key addition.
