Mitch Moreland, best known for his four-year stint with the Boston Red Sox from 2017-20, received national attention Tuesday night, appearing as a clue on the long-running quiz show Jeopardy! Moreland was the basis for a $200 question in the category of “Sports Nicknames,” with Amy Schneider (who extended her Jeopardy! winning streak to 15 games) correctly answering that the one-time Gold Glove recipient played baseball.
Given the moniker “Mitchy Four Bags” for his home-run prowess (186 career round-trippers), the 6’3” slugger has also, at times, gone by “Two Bags,” alluding to his penchant for smashing doubles including many off of Fenway Park’s famous Green Monster in left field. The 36-year-old was thrilled to be referenced on Jeopardy!, sharing the video on his Instagram story.
Moreland, who made his MLB debut for Texas in 2010, joined teammates Mookie Betts, Chris Sale, J.D. Martinez and Craig Kimbrel as one of five Red Sox All-Star representatives in 2018. The first baseman won a World Series with Boston later that year. Currently a free agent, Moreland hit .227 with 10 homers, 11 doubles and 30 RBI in 81 games for Oakland last season.
