According to Enrique Rojas of ESPN, former Red Sox shortstop Julio Lugo has passed away.

Lugo played with the Red Sox from 2007-09, serving as the starting shortstop for the '07 world champion team.

He was signed by the Red Sox as a free agent heading into the 2007 season, agreeing to four-year, $36 million deal after spending the majority of the three previous seasons with Tampa Bay. (He would finish off 2006 with the Dodgers.)

Lugo played in 147 regular-season games for the '07 Red Sox, before totaling just 82 the following year. He would ultimately be dealt to the Cardinals at the 2009 trade deadline for Chris Duncan.

A native of the Dominican Republic, the affable right-handed hitter played 12 seasons in the major leagues, with his last year coming in 2011 with the Braves.

Lugo returned to Fenway Park in 2018 for the organization's Alumni Game, highlighting the day with a titanic home run off Pedro Martinez.
