UPDATE: Cordero went deep again on Wednesday, and is now the first player in Yankee history with four or more home runs and 11 or more RBI in his first seven games with the team, per ESPN Stats & Info.
Franchy Cordero continued to be a revelation for the Yankees on Tuesday night, blasting his third home run of the season, a three-run blast to right field to break open a tight game in the bottom of the third.
The three-run shot put Cordero in the team lead in RBI, a pleasant surprise from a player who was a late addition to the big league squad following the spring injury to Harrison Bader and the continued struggles of Aaron Hicks.
Now, the Yanks appear to have a temporary solution, a sequel to last year’s Matt Carpenter, as Cordero has come out of the gates firing.
Cordero now has three home runs and 10 RBI on the season, and, according to the YES Network, is just the second player in franchise history to reach those marks in just his first six games with the team, the other being Robin Ventura, who had those same numbers through six games back in 2002.
It remains to be seen whether Cordero can keep up this pace, or a productive one at all, as he hasn’t been able to find stability during his seven years in the majors, but he has always been lauded for his ability to make hard contact, and perhaps the Yankees have unlocked a way to help Cordero achieve that more consistently.
Cordero spent the previous two seasons with the Red Sox after being acquired from Kansas City in the Andrew Benintendi trade. He struggled to produce, though, hitting just .209 with a .629 OPS, nine home runs and 38 RBIs in 132 total games.
